Flood Alert: NIHSA Warns Riverine Wards to Prepare as Rains Intensify
By Sokari Fyneface· 7 July 2026
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued an amber flood alert for riverine wards of Wakirike Kingdom, warning that continued heavy rainfall could raise water levels beyond the two-year average by the end of the month.
Emergency management officials have begun distributing sandbags and encouraging households near the waterfront to move valuables to higher ground. Schools in three wards have been placed on standby for possible temporary closure.
'We are asking people to take this seriously and not wait until water is at the doorstep,' a NIHSA spokesperson said during a briefing on Tuesday.
