The Okrika Local Government Area has taken another significant step towards strengthening local livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities with the official flag-off of Phase 2 of the Tobin Akuro Prosperity Pathway (TAPP), an empowerment programme designed to support entrepreneurs, fishermen and young people across the Local Government Area.

The initiative, launched by the Executive Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area, Chief Hon. Akuro Alfred Tobin, DSSRS, JP, underscores the administration's commitment to inclusive development through economic empowerment, skills acquisition and support for small businesses.

The colourful ceremony attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, members of the Renewed Hope Family, business owners, community stakeholders and residents from across Okrika, all gathered to witness what many described as another milestone in the Council's people-centred development agenda.

Direct Support for Small Businesses

At the heart of the programme was financial support for local entrepreneurs.

A total of 400 business owners drawn from markets across Okrika received grants of ₦150,000 each, providing much-needed capital to strengthen existing businesses, expand operations and improve household incomes.

The grants are expected to benefit traders across various sectors of the local economy, reinforcing the important role that small businesses play in job creation and community development.

Strengthening Okrika's Fishing Economy

Recognising the importance of fishing as one of Okrika's oldest and most vital occupations, the Council also unveiled a targeted support package for 60 local fishermen.

Each beneficiary received essential fishing equipment, including canoe boats, fishing nets, paddles, as well as cash support for the transportation of the equipment.

The intervention is expected to improve productivity within the local fishing industry while supporting families whose livelihoods depend on the rich waterways of Wakirike.

For a coastal community where fishing remains both a cultural tradition and an important economic activity, the initiative represents a direct investment in the blue economy.

Investing in the Next Generation

Youth development formed another major pillar of the programme.

The Council sponsored 100 young people to undergo vocational training in high-demand trades including:

  • Scaffolding
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Makeup artistry
  • Fashion design

The training is aimed at equipping participants with practical skills that can lead to sustainable self-employment, entrepreneurship and long-term economic independence.

Speaking during the event, Chairman Chief Hon. Akuro Alfred Tobin assured the trainees that the Council's support would not end with classroom instruction.

He announced that successful participants would receive startup equipment upon completion of their training, enabling them to establish their own businesses and begin earning sustainable incomes.

The commitment was warmly received by beneficiaries and guests, who described it as a practical approach to ensuring that skills acquired are translated into real economic opportunities.

Commendation for the Initiative

The Special Guest of Honour, Chief Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, was represented by Chief Dr. Chris Biriowu.

In his remarks, Dr. Biriowu commended the Chairman for demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving the welfare of Okrika people through the Tobin Akuro Prosperity Pathway.

He encouraged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the grants, training and equipment, noting that responsible utilisation would not only improve individual livelihoods but also contribute to the broader economic development of the Local Government Area.

Building a Prosperous Okrika

The launch of Phase 2 of TAPP reflects a broader development philosophy that places people at the centre of governance.

Rather than focusing solely on infrastructure, the programme combines financial inclusion, vocational education and support for traditional occupations to create multiple pathways to prosperity.

By supporting market traders, strengthening the fishing industry and equipping young people with employable skills, the Council aims to stimulate local enterprise, reduce unemployment and build a more resilient economy.

As Okrika continues to invest in its people, initiatives such as TAPP demonstrate how targeted empowerment programmes can create lasting opportunities, strengthen communities and lay the foundation for sustainable development.
