The Diaspora Can't Keep Funding What Government Won't

It has become a familiar story in these pages: a diaspora association raises money to fix a clinic, rebuild a school block, or reopen a health post that government neglect allowed to fall apart. We celebrate it, and we should. But we should also be uncomfortable with how normal it has become.

Diaspora generosity was never meant to be a substitute for basic government responsibility. Every time we quietly absorb a failure of governance through a fundraising gala, we remove one more reason for anyone in power to feel pressure to do their job.

Support home, yes. But pair every donation with a public demand that government explain why the gap existed in the first place.
