Widows' Cooperative in Abuloma Opens Community Grain Bank to Fight Hunger
By Tamuno Wokoma· 7 July 2026
Forty women in the Abuloma Widows' Cooperative have pooled their savings to open a community grain bank, offering subsidised rice, garri, and beans to households struggling through the lean season.
The initiative began three years ago as a small savings circle and has since grown into a registered cooperative supplying over 300 families. 'We started this because we know what it means to go a day without food,' said cooperative chair Grace Wonodi.
Local government officials have pledged a matching grant to help the group build a proper storage warehouse before the next planting season.
